"How to get hired in this day and age in IT in Houston"

The CodeRED Hackathon is an annual contest in which team of mostly college-age students compete in team to design and implement technical solutions to open-ended problems—all within an intense 24-hour window. Most competitors get no more than a few hours of sleep during the competition. I was a judge last year, and saw some pretty cool augmented reality development, Harvey-inspired civil defense applications, some social media apps, hardware hacks, and more. It’s not uncommon to find future employees at these events. The Hackathon will be from the morning of Saturday, November 3 to the morning of Sunday, November 4. They need mentors and judges.

Mentors advise team who have plenty of enthusiasm and talent, but often need the maturity and real-world perspective that we can provide. To be a mentor, you’d need to be available during the day on Saturday. The kickoff is around 9 AM. There aren’t set hours; mentors often come and go, and some who live nearby even check on their teams at night.

Judges are welcome to come to the kickoff, but the job requirement is to be there Sunday morning. You’ll look at the projects, have a brief presentation by each team, and evaluate each project using defined criteria.

SIM together with HISD Together with Tech
SIM was the leading sponsor of HISD Together with Tech, a competition featuring technology and engineering solutions presented by high school students district wide. SIM members Keith Strong and Mark Sakowitz served as judges for Digital Voice, Engineering Solutions, and Code IT exhibits.

Our chapter has supported Computdopt for many years. This organization takes used computer equipment, repairs and refurbishes it, and provides it to low-income families and children who are technologically disadvantaged. They’ll accept just about anything except CRTs. Computers, printers, flat panel monitors, and other peripherals are all welcome. As our businesses look toward the end of the 2018 fiscal year, consider whether this organization may be a good recipient of your displaced equipment. All drives are wiped to a DoD standard, and the organization can provide certificates of erasure if required. If you have equipment for them, either from your business or your home, please contact them through their webside and also let the Outreach committee know at outreach@simhouston.org (we track SIM’s involvement with each of the organizations we support).
