Speaker BIO
Ellis R. Wyms has been a winner on and off the field. His experience in the world of sports and business gives him a unique perspective on what it takes to be a winner. The NFL has helped to mold him into a man that cares about his community and has aided him in understanding the importance of teamwork in the field of education of our youth.
Ellis’ life story is one of perseverance, hard work and a winning attitude. Ellis grew up in Indianola, Mississippi, a small town in the Mississippi Delta. As a youth, he never imagined playing big time college football at Mississippi State University. After 4 years at Mississippi State and receiving a degree in Technology Teacher Education, he was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 6th round of the NFL Draft. He went on to play 8 years in the NFL and was a part of the 2003 Super Bowl Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. During his NFL playing career, Ellis participated in 5 division championships for the Buccaneers, Seahawks, and Vikings. He also was a consistent and positive presence in the communities for which he played. Ellis also spent 3 years at Merrill Lynch as an Advisor and Client Management Specialist.
In 2013, Ellis established The Wyms Foundation. The Wyms Foundation creates camps and programs that focus on fitness and S.T.E.M. Ellis’main goal when working with young people has been to prepare them for life after high-school.
In 2018, he founded Athletes For Computer Science. AFCS is a non-profit that provides computer science fundamentals courses to elementary and middle school students. Ellis believes computer science should be a fundamental part of a child’s education and that it will give them a better chance to compete for the best careers as adults. He truly believes that the currency needed to build wealth in our communities lies in the education of our youth.
